Waris, que en somalí significa “Flor del desierto”, es el nombre de la protagonista de esta historia, la modelo de origen africano Waris Dirie, que con apenas 13 años salió de su aldea de origen, huyendo de un matrimonio impuesto.

Sobre las dificultades vividas por esta mujer hasta convertirse en una cotizada modelo profesional, trata esta película dirigida por Sherry Horman y basada en el libro de Waris Dirie, “Flor del desierto” que conmovió a millones de personas en todo el mundo.

Un film que pone de manifiesto la necesidad de actuar contra la ablación de genitales femeninos que sufren 130 millones de mujeres en el mundo. Los inmigrantes siguen realizando esta practica en Europa, Asia y Estados Unidos.

Waris Dirie fue la primera mujer que habló públicamente de la mutilación genital femenina, y que logro atraer la atención sobre el problema.

En 1997 fue nombrada embajadora especial de la ONU en la lucha contra esta atrocidad y desde entonces la ablación ha sido prohibida en muchos países.

A día de hoy, 6000 niñas son mutiladas diariamente.
